How to measure a tumbler for a sublimation template
The single most common reason a tumbler print has a gap or a crooked seam is a template that was copied from someone else's blank. Two "20 oz skinny" tumblers from different suppliers can differ by a few tenths of an inch, which is enough to leave a white line. Measuring takes one minute:
- Circumference: wrap a strip of paper or a soft sewing tape around the widest part of the printable area. Mark where it meets, then measure the strip. This is more accurate than measuring the diameter with a ruler.
- Printable height: measure from just below the lip (where the lid sits) to just above the bottom curve. Don't include rounded edges, because the shrink wrap can't press the paper flat there.
- Check for taper: measure the circumference at the top and the bottom. If they differ by more than about 0.1 in, your tumbler is tapered and you need the tapered tumbler template generator instead.
Why add a seam overlap?
Sublimation paper never wraps perfectly flush. A small overlap of about 0.05–0.15 in makes sure the two ends of the design meet with no unprinted gap. Keep important details (names, faces, text) away from the seam, and use a background color or pattern that continues across the edge.
Template sizes, pixels and DPI
Most sublimation printers produce sharp results at 300 DPI. A 9.3 × 8.2 in template at 300 DPI is 2790 × 2460 pixels. The PNG you download from this page has its DPI saved inside the file, so apps that read print size will open it at the real physical size. If you design in Canva, create a custom size in inches using the numbers above.
Common straight tumbler sizes
These are typical published template sizes. They are a starting point only, since every brand is slightly different:
| Tumbler | Typical template | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| 20 oz skinny straight | 9.3 × 8.2 in | 2790 × 2460 |
For any other size, measure your blank and enter the numbers above. It's faster than hunting for a chart that may not match your supplier.
Printing tips
- Mirror the image if your printer software or sublimation paper requires it (most sublimation paper does for text to read correctly).
- Print with the paper's coated (usually brighter white) side facing up.
- Use heat-resistant tape at the seam and the ends, then shrink wrap or press. See the sublimation time and temperature chart for starting settings.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a 20 oz skinny tumbler sublimation template?
A typical 20 oz skinny straight tumbler template is about 9.3 × 8.2 inches (2790 × 2460 pixels at 300 DPI). Brands vary, so measure your own blank's circumference and printable height to be sure.
Should I measure circumference or diameter?
Circumference. Wrap a strip of paper around the tumbler and measure it. Diameter measured with a ruler is easy to get slightly wrong, and that error is multiplied by 3.14.
What DPI should a tumbler template be?
300 DPI is the standard for sharp sublimation prints. 150–200 DPI can be acceptable for simple designs, but small text and fine detail will look softer.
Why is there a white line on my tumbler seam?
The design is slightly narrower than the tumbler. Add a seam overlap of about 0.1 inch and make sure the background continues across both edges.
