What DPI means for sublimation
DPI (dots per inch, often used interchangeably with PPI, pixels per inch) tells you how many image pixels are packed into each printed inch. The more pixels per inch, the sharper the print. For sublimation, 300 DPI is the standard target. A design that's 9.3 inches wide needs about 2790 pixels across to print at 300 DPI.
The simple formulas
- Print size (inches) = pixels ÷ DPI. A 3000 px wide image prints 10 inches wide at 300 DPI.
- Pixels needed = inches × DPI. An 11 oz mug wrap (8.5 × 3.5 in) at 300 DPI needs 2550 × 1050 px.
- Effective DPI = pixels ÷ inches. A 1200 px image stretched to 8 inches is only 150 DPI.
Changing the DPI number doesn't add detail
Changing a file's DPI setting from 72 to 300 in an app only changes how big it says it should print; it doesn't create new detail. What matters is the actual pixel count compared to the size you print. If an image is too small, your options are to print it smaller, find a higher-resolution version, or use a good upscaler and then check the result closely.
How sharp is sharp enough?
| Effective DPI | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 280 and up | Excellent. Crisp text and fine detail. |
| 200–279 | Good for most blanks. Very small text may look a bit soft. |
| 150–199 | Fair. Acceptable for big, bold shirt designs viewed from a distance. |
| Below 150 | Low. Expect blurry edges or visible pixels. |
Tip for Cricut Print Then Cut users
Print Then Cut has a maximum printable area that depends on your machine and paper size, and Design Space can resize images when you upload them. Check the final size in inches on the canvas, then run the quality check here with that size.
Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is 300 DPI?
It depends on the print size: multiply inches by 300. For example, 10 inches at 300 DPI is 3000 pixels.
Is 150 DPI good enough for sublimation?
For large, simple shirt designs it can be acceptable, but fine text and detail will look soft. Aim for 300 DPI on mugs, tumblers and anything viewed up close.
Does changing DPI in Photoshop make my image sharper?
No. Changing the DPI value without changing the pixel count only changes the suggested print size. Sharpness depends on how many pixels you have for the size you print.
